Representin': Bike to Work '08

bike to work dayYesterday was the high holy holiday for bike commuters - "Bike to Work Day".  As a daily bike commuter, it's a kind of dream come true to see so many people taking advantage of the fresh morning air, a bit of exercise, zero emission transit, and the relaxing certainty that comes from knowing you're not getting in a jam. Overall, more than 50,000 riders participated in the Bay Area. The Chronicle reported that bikes made up 2/3 of all traffic heading down Market Street!

According to this bike calculator,  yesterday's commute saved me $7.35 and 13.6 pounds of emissions.  I supposedly also burned 560 calories, but I think that was mitigated by the free bananas and bars eaten along the way, in the giveaway mousette bags packed with snacks, coupons and bike literature.

Unfortunately, not everyone was enjoying bicycle bliss.  On the ride home, a woman in a Suburban (or was it an M4 Sherman?) cut me off at a light and forced me into her side view mirror.  Further on, she catches me and pulls over - not to see if I'm OK, but to insist I apologize for hitting her car!  So much for relaxing certainty...
